Gorilla trekking in Africa is one of the most remarkable wildlife encounters on earth and many travelers have described the experience as life-changing. Trekking gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda in 2024 is very much possible although there are a few Guidelines for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda & Rwanda 2024. This article will provide you with all the necessary information about the Guidelines for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda & Rwanda 2024/ Rules and Regulations for Gorilla Trekking 2024.

The rules and regulations for gorilla trekking are clearly defined by the wildlife authorities and conservation bodies of the Virungas and Bwindi Impenetrable Forests, whose mission is to sustainably protect and conserve wildlife. Thanks to the procedures, mountain gorillas have flourished and tourists can visit them in their natural habitat.

If you’re organizing for a gorilla trekking safari, being aware of the rules and restrictions can let you enjoy the gorilla experience to the fullest while abiding by conservation laws.

Guidelines for Gorilla Trekking

Here are the important things to know before departing on your gorilla tracking:

Only 8 visitors can trek a single group of habituated mountain gorillas in a day. This was set in place to help minimize behavioral disturbance to the gorillas and the risk of their exposure to human-borne diseases. Both in Uganda and Rwanda, a maximum of 8 trekkers are allocated to a single family each day.

If you are planning to trek gorillas while having symptoms of a cold or other infectious illness, you will not be allowed to trek. This is a measure taken to protect gorillas from human bone diseases since they share DNA with humans and can contract disease.

Gorilla trekking in both Uganda and Rwanda is available to anybody as long as they possess a gorilla trekking permit and they’re above 15 years of age.

It is recommended that tourists carry light equipment to minimize the need for porters while they undertake the tracking.

During the trek in the forest – Rules and Regulations for gorilla trekking – Guidelines for Gorilla Trekking

During the trek, you should always keep your voice low and listen to the guide’s instructions and information as you trek through the jungle.

Avoid dropping or throwing rubbish in the park, it is recommended that you leave the park with whatever you came with.

Upon locating your gorilla family, your guide will ask you to leave your backpack and gadgets about 50 meters from the gorillas and will allow you to approach with only your camera or phone calmly.

What to do when with gorillas – Guidelines for Gorilla Trekking

You must keep a distance of not less than 10 meters (32 feet) away from the gorillas. Gorillas are wild animals and they may not observe this rule so tourists are advised to avoid contact as much as they can. The more distant you will be, the more relaxed the group will be.

You are required to keep your voice down at all times although you can ask the guide questions and follow their instructions during your stay with the gorillas.

Avoid smoking, drinking, or eating when you are near the gorillas. Eating or drinking inevitably will increase the risk of food/drink morsels/droplets falling, which could increase the risk of transmission of diseases.

At times when gorillas Charge, you are required to stay calm and follow the guide’s instructions. For example (crouch down slowly, do not look the gorillas directly in the eyes when they’re agitated, and wait for the animals to pass). Never try to run away because that will increase the risk of the gorilla tackling you down.

Flash photography is not permitted. You are required to set up your gadgets easily enough to avoid making mistakes. While doing photography, move slowly and carefully.

Do not attempt to touch the gorillas. They are wild animals and do not understand your modern gadgets, tools, and expressions. So, avoid contact at all times.

You will be allowed an exclusive one hour with gorillas. However, if the gorillas become agitated or nervous, the guide may end the visit early.

After trekking the gorillas, you are required to keep your voice down until you are 200 meters away from them.
